Introduction

March 2026 Page Upgrade
This page is under reconstruction following HTML and CSS code upgrades and changes from 2 or 3 columns to one responsive phone-friendly display.
Inevitability, some images or text may be out of order or temporarily missing.
This single vertical sluice gate on the Old Bedford River about a hundred yards north of Welney Bridge was built in 1973 by the Great Ouse River Authority (GORA).

It normally operates automatically and is shut just before the Welches Dam pumping station begins pumping water from the Old Bedford/ Counterdrain into the River Delph.
